Indonesian Ministry Refutes U.S. Rumour of Rice Import

One couple choose rice in a supermaket in Jakart, May 15, 2002. The Agriculture Ministry of Indonesia refuted a rumour made by the United States Department of Agriculture that Indonesia would import about 2.5 million tons of rice in 2002, making the country the world`s largest rice importer. It said that Indonesia would import some 1.3 million tons of rice this year despite the threat of the drought-inducing El Nino weather phenomenon.
