AMMAN/BAGHDAD, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Leaders from Middle Eastern countries on Monday renewed their call for de-escalation of Israeli-Iranian tensions, underscoring the urgency of ending the regional crisis and reviving diplomatic negotiations.
In a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq Al Said reaffirmed Oman's commitment to actively contributing to resolving the crisis, preventing further escalation, and establishing fair and just settlements that restore stability.
He also extended condolences to Pezeshkian over the victims of recent Israeli strikes, condemned the damage to infrastructure and civilian facilities, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
For his part, Pezeshkian affirmed Iran's support for diplomatic solutions through dialogue and negotiation, as well as its adherence to international law and respect for state sovereignty.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani urged the international community to fulfill its role in halting Israel's "aggression" and to pursue a peaceful solution through the resumption of negotiations.
During a meeting with heads of diplomatic missions from Asian and American countries in Iraq, al-Sudani condemned Israeli attacks against Iran, describing them as a threat to global peace and security, as well as to Iraq's own stability and security.
The Iraqi prime minister warned that Israel is seeking to expand the scope of war in the region in order to redraw the map of the Middle East.
In separate telephone discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Pezeshkian, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also called for a diplomatic resolution to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, according to a statement from the Turkish presidency.
In his conversation with Putin, Erdogan characterized recent Israeli actions against Iran as instigating a "dangerous cycle of violence" that jeopardizes regional security.
The Turkish leader underscored that his country has consistently prioritized diplomatic channels and reiterated that dialogue is the only viable path to de-escalating tensions with Iran. He stressed the urgent need for negotiations to resume.
During his call with the Iranian president, Erdogan emphasized the imperative of a swift cessation of hostilities and reiterated Türkiye's commitment to fostering peace and stability in the region.
In a phone conversation with the European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warned of the serious consequences of continued escalation in the region.
He stressed that efforts to defuse tensions between Iran and Israel must not distract attention from the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, reiterating Jordan's call for a permanent ceasefire and the immediate, adequate, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza through relevant United Nations agencies.
The two officials reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing political solutions that promote regional stability and establish a just and lasting peace. ■
